The Biden administration's border policies have enabled a large influx of illegal immigrants, including some with violent criminal records, to enter the country unlawfully. This issue impacts communities nationwide, not just border states.
Over the past year, we have seen this illegal immigration crisis breed deadly consequences right here in Michigan. Over the past year we have seen the deadly consequences of open border, and sanctuary county policies.
A young woman in Grand Rapids, Ruby Garcia, was murdered by an illegal alien who was previously deported and came back into America through an open border. A Kalamazoo County man, David Meyers, was killed last year by an illegal alien who was deported in 2019, and then came back to America through an open southern border.
If our southern border was secure, Ruby and David would still be alive today. Instead, Democrats have refused to close our border and fully enforce our immigration laws.
In 2018, Kalamazoo County enacted policies to make it a “Sanctuary County” that refuses to fully cooperate with Federal Immigration Officials. These sanctuary cities and counties invite proven criminals to come where they can hide from deportation even if they’re arrested for another crime. Disastrous sanctuary policies impede the work of federal immigration officials and exacerbate the public safety crisis. We must ban sanctuary cities to protect Michigan residents.
State Rep. Matt Hall introduced legislation last year that would prohibit counties and municipalities from adopting policies that prevent local employees from communicating or cooperating with federal immigration officials.
